With all manner of Latin bands between Los Angeles and Miami offering their spin on hip-hop, American funk, and reggae, it's easy to forget that there are contemporary acts reaping plenty of commercial and critical success by sticking close to the old-school playbook. Miami-based Tiempo Libre is one such outfit, a group of seven young Cuban cats who get dance floors jumping with a special brand of timba — their country's version of salsa. The group earned a recent Latin Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Latin Album, and tonight's crowd is bound to break a sweat and sing along rapturously to all of the swift-moving tunes.
