- Head (1968)
According to the film's trailer, Head is the "most extraordinary adventure, western, comedy, love story, mystery, drama, musical, documentary satire ever made" — and that doesn't even begin to describe this scattershot romp starring the Monkees. Rumored to be an act of vengeance directed at NBC for canceling their show, it's one very strange and subversive trip, even for renowned headcases like Jack Nicholson — who co-wrote the script and makes a cameo appearance — and Bob Rafelson (of Five Easy Pieces fame), who co-wrote and directed. A hallucinogenic work that captures a counterculture era at its zenith, Head features seemingly random appearances by mermaids, belly dancers, and Victor Mature, making it a must-see for those who love obscure pop culture and '60s pop music.
