Definitely not to be confused with the hillbillies in Patrick Swayze's same-named 1989 revenge flick, Atom Egoyan's Kin chronicles the plight of a man named Peter, who has had enough of his own dysfunctional family and decides to join another. Peter's move requires him to assume the identity of a son long-ago given up for adoption. This ruse gives the story its delicious duplicity, but the film's poignant moments give it its power. This screening, the Canadian director's debut, is the first in a two-month series held at Miami Beach Cinematheque.
