Reading N.M. Kelby: Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar & Grill

Since author Carl Hiaasen appears to be spending the summer on the links (see: The Downhill Lie), it's up to one of his former students, N.M. Kelby, to keep us running through the rapacious wilds of south Florida. In Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar & Grill, Kelby, who came of age with a low blow entitled Whale Season, takes all the requisite Hiaasenian elements — noble locals, greedy developers, murder — and concocts something that's wholly her own. Stretching Hiaasen's blueprint to its limits, she pits the bar-running "Queen of Scream" against a cast that includes mad Andy Griffith Show re-enactors, a bad Barry Manilow impersonator, and a sad excuse for a circus.
