New York has always been a magnet for black sheep, providing a makeshift family for people who don't have family of their own. In Sangre de Mi Sangre, the city is put under a microscope. Pedro steals into town from Mexico to find his long-lost father, but instead is robbed of his identity by fellow émigré Juan, and then exploited by Spanish-speaking hustler Magda; eventually, he cobbles together the support that he needs in the city's streets. Almost perfectly lit, and blessed with a cast so naturalistic that you forget they're acting, this Spanish-language feature is one of the most substantive winners of Sundance's Grand Jury prize in a long while.
