Art Barry Sparkman: Hypnea

The University of Miami's Wynwood Project Space lights up with Barry Sparkman's Hypnea, the Miami-based artist's latest solo effort. Sparkman shows off his Renaissance-man side by employing a variety of techniques — block printing, silk screening, lithography, etching, and monotypes. The artist, who is currently studying at UM for his second MFA, begins with source imagery of the Hypnea plant, then layers various media over it to create abstract, psychedelic landscapes that vibrate with an exuberant array of colors. Dense foliage patterns are undone by abstract bursts, transforming the pieces from still lifes into fresh, happy chaos.
