Film: Documentary Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell

Who woulda thunk an Oskaloosa-born cellist would one day be remembered as a vital force in New York art-disco music? Then again, how many Oskaloosa-born cellists ever accompanied Allen Ginsberg, played with art-house heavies such as Philip Glass, David Byrne, and Peter Gordon, and had their tracks mixed by the likes of François Kevorkian? Arthur Russell, co-founder of indie-dance label Sleeping Bag Records, might be best known for producing Loose Joints' rousing "Is It All Over My Face," but the spirit of inventiveness he brought to everything he did can be heard on dance floors to this day. Director Matt Wolf paints a portrait of the proto-garage-house master, whose work is finally receiving its proper due.
