Film The Fall

In The Fall, a paralyzed Hollywood stuntman convalesces in a hospital where a young Romanian girl heals from a broken collarbone. To compel her to steal a fatal dose of medicine, he seduces the child with a swashbuckling revenge saga that proves visually arresting enough to compensate for its protracted sentimentality. Writer/director Tarsem Singh's last project, The Cell (2000), was a muddle of psychological science-fiction that, like this one, paid unofficial homage to such artists as Damien Hirst and Hieronymus Bosch. Both films provide a gloriously art-directed study of how style can outstrip substance so effectively that you barely notice it happening.
