Film Miss Julie (1951)

Of the three movie adaptations of August Strindberg's 19th-century play, this version by Alf Sjöberg is perhaps the most successful, and not just because both the director and playwright are Swedish. Rather, if one's going to address old-school turmoil among master, daughter, and manservant, one should be as close to the period as possible, and the '50s were probably the last decade during which an affair between a lady of the manor and her father's lowly butler was considered scandalous. Still, it's a kick to watch as the very thing that pulls the two together eventually tears them apart, especially when the breakdown is seen through a lens that avoids making sentimental concessions.
