Freestyle may be a throwback sound for many people around the country, but in South Florida the style never really went away. Emerging out of urban Latin communities in Miami and New York during the early '80s, freestyle married big, clattering hip-hop drums with pulsing synthesizers and electronic bass. Rappers didn't take notice; instead, catchy nursery-rhyme melodies were laid over the tracks by singers who prized enthusiasm over vocal training. Tonight, some of the folks responsible for the genre's true anthems take the stage, including Stevie B. and Lisa Lisa.
