Despite being little more than a long-running (albeit completely rad) music video, Prince's semi-autobiographical tale of "The Kid"'s rise to stardom confirmed his reputation as a fashion-forward sex symbol and spawned a mega-hit soundtrack that consumed 1984's pop-culture universe. Purple Rain wasn't the beginning of Prince's career (the soundtrack was in fact his sixth album), and it certainly wasn't the end — but it's the moment when he lived up to his royal name and ruled the world in all his funky, kinky splendor.
