- Calendar
An Armenian-Canadian photographer is hired to shoot a series of ancient Armenian churches for a calendar, and, not knowing the language, he brings his wife along to translate. While he makes his images, the couple's driver tells the story of each edifice, which, taken together, become the story of the country itself. The lensman is nonplussed, but his wife is enraptured by the driver and ditches her husband. In the aftermath, the photographer dines with escorts, concocts home movies, and unsuccessfully tries to recapture some of what he has lost. Calendar might be director Atom Egoyan's most personal work, and in an oeuvre full of deeply personal films, that's saying something.
