Film le Moko (1937)

Pépé may be from Marseilles, but now he's on the lam in the Algiers Casbah, and his hometown may as well not even exist. The thing is, when you're a criminal, crime has a way of catching up with you, no matter where you are; so do the cops, especially when you go out of your way to save a dame. Julien Duvivier's pre-war classic, equal parts gritty realism and film noir, follows the French gangster through the strange terrain of colonial Algeria and all the way to his self-inflicted demise.
