Film: Documentary The Sugar Babies

Sugar and slavery have been entwined since Christopher Columbus' voyage to the West Indies, but few could have imagined a time when neighbors would enslave neighbors. According to writer/director/producer Amy Serrano, that's just what's happening on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, where sugar plantations owned by the powerful Fanjul family employ thousands of indentured Haitians, many of them children. Narrated by writer Edwidge Danticat, The Sugar Babies follows this unfortunate story into a very dark period of history. After Wednesday's screening of the film, Serrano and former US Ambassador for the UN Human Rights Commission Armando Valladares lead a discussion.
