When Depeche Mode 101 was filmed in 1988, the term "reality TV" had yet to invade the cultural lexicon. The documentary chronicles Depeche Mode's tour for Music for the Masses and presaged the reality genre by having fans follow the group on the road while cameras kept a close watch. The result is a doc filled with conflict and emotion that goes beyond the musicians onstage. The finale — Depeche Mode's sold-out Rose Bowl show — keeps the balance with footage of the group playing its hits.
