Too many folks write off Steely Dan as another aging, lightweight '70s band that's only relevant to soft-rock radio listeners. That's a shame, because their cursory listening misses out on some of the sliest sing-along stanzas ever to hit pop music, all laid over funky, intricately arranged, butter-smooth jazz-rock that has found new life as one of the most sampled catalogs in hip-hop history — Kanye West, Ice Cube, and De la Soul all stand among the guilty. Simply put, the Dan duo's bitter, literary humor, crafty, catchy melodies, and meticulous musicianship make them the kind of classic band you ought to be obsessed with.
