Whether it's through religion or within other contexts (including quotidian activity), the notion of ritual has long been part of many cultures around the world. Currently at the Bass Museum of Art, Human Rites gathers a number of international artists exploring our need for ritual through inventive installations, sculptures, projections, photographs, and videos. Highlights include Mark Dion's cabinet of found and collected objects; Marina Abramovic's subversive pieces about womanhood; Thomas Hirschhorn's massively oversized, gold foil "CNN" necklace; Ai Weiwei's large, totemic installation of several welded bicycles; and Paolo Canevari's disquieting video of a kid kicking around a rubber skull like a soccer ball in a destitute area, where the Serbian Army's former headquarters (bombed by NATO in 1999) once stood.

Bass Museum of Art says…

This exhibition examines ritual through art; and it also examines art through ritual, depending on your point of view. From mundane human activities to sacred practices, from the past through the present, rites and rituals have been pervasive subjects in artistic practice. Human Rites will present works such as 15th century devotional polychrome statues of Mary and 16th century altarpieces alongside works by renowned contemporary artists. This juxtaposition of works circumscribes the timelessness of rituals, expressed historically and anthropologically in religious, as well as other contexts.
