“Every year, the Contemporary Arts Project invites two artists (both national and local) to absorb the essence of Vizcaya — a public museum and National Historial Landmark inspired by the Italian Renaissance — and create a site-specific exhibition that enriches the spirit of this Miami treasure. 2012's first invitee, New York-based Francesco Simeti, is known for his political and social critiques woven into antique-inspired wallpaper and collages. Here, he rethinks the traditional lines of a Vizcaya outdoor fountain, creating a series of floating sculptures sparked by elements of the estate, in addition to displaying historic artifacts culled from the museum's storage and shown for the first time within the Main House. As if this place wasn’t intriguing enough (with its lavish architecture harmonizing with expansive gardens), the exhibit, titled A seahorse, a caravel, and large quantities of concrete, stone, fill, topsoil, tiles, piping, trees, and other plants, gives you another reason to jump out of bed early and visit the property.”
