Insulation foam may be the defining sculptural material of the current generation, and Dutch artist Folkert de Jong is its maestro, creating grotesque, figurative tableaux from its blue, pink, and yellow versions. The four installations at James Cohan center on life-sized depictions of the harlequin, inspired by the lanky, misanthropic figures found in Picasso's paintings from his blue and rose periods. Acrobatic figures arrange themselves in vertiginous towers in the two sculptures in the main gallery, Human Pyramid and Human Pyramid; Violin Player, but in the back gallery's Circle of Trust, figures cluster around an oil drum, offering a glimpse of their unglamorous, itinerant life off the stage.
