Marianne Boesky Gallery says…

Jay Heikes' recent sculptures are based on a joke that begins "So there's this pirate..." They've evolved from a video of the artist telling the joke into collages of video stills and props, including a large metal cane (shown at the last Whitney Biennial) used to yank comedians offstage. For his New York solo debut, Heikes presents the ninth incarnation of the series. At this point, the joke has been retold so many times that it's hardly recognizable. Photocopied drawings of stills have devolved into zigzagging, abstract shapes. Using mundane materials, Heikes crafts intriguing and humorously simple objects, such as a primitive rat trap composed of a huge weight suspended above a small piece of cheese.
