Karen Yasinsky's exhibition is inspired by Jean Vigo's classic 1934 film L'Atalante, which follows ill-suited newlyweds Jean and Juliette and their marriage's demise while on a barge honeymoon, catalyzed by the brawny, tattooed second mate, Jules. Empathy fluctuates from Juliette, the adoring bride in Yasinsky's black-and-white Jean and Juliette, to Jean, with a murderous black-widow spider on his face in diptych L'Atalante #11. In both La Nuit, a 16mm stop-motion piece made with dolls, and the animated Jules and Juliette, it's the subtlety of suggested movements, restless sleep, or a hovering finger over a breast that speaks emotional volumes.
