Molière's most celebrated play, The Misanthrope has never ceased to be relevant, with its profound and elegant questioning of absurd, socially constructed conventions and pretensions. Belgian director Ivo van Hove takes it a step further, with his stripped-down, yet tech-heavy, production. The actors, clad in stylish black-and-white suits with Blackberries in hand, embody a modern-day sensibility. Cameras chase them on- and offstage, projecting and prolonging the images. A shockingly amusing scene involving projectile condiments embodies the play's persistent allegory but does not detract from Bill Camp's emotionally raw performance as a man who risks unpopularity and disdain in order to speak his mind.
