P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center says…

P.S.1 curators have devised the best way to watch (or skim) all 15 hours and 39 minutes of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1979-80 made-for-TV film, Berlin Alexanderplatz: dividing it into 14 sections and having each loop continuously in its own room. Based on Alfred Döblin's sprawling realist novel and laden with grotesque tragedy, Alexanderplatz is set in the criminal underbelly of '30s Berlin. Upstairs, German sculptor Kris Martin makes his New York debut with a gigantic, broken-then-reassembled Chinese vase, pared-down replicas of a airport departure board, and the classically inspired sculpture Laocoön. Senso Unico surveys contemporary Italian sculpture, from glamorous contrarian Vanessa Beecroft to provocateur Francesco Vezzoli, while paintings from Kathe Burkhart depict the many personas of Elizabeth Taylor.
