Japan Society says…

Though New York's Japan Society hosts only two exhibitions a year, they're reliably terrific. This fall, young curator Eric C. Shiner presents a show of 33 contemporary Japanese artists who call New York home, from Fluxus luminary Yoko Ono to up-and-comers like painter Hiroyuki Nakamura, messy sculptor and collagist Misaki Kawai, and the dirty-drawing manga artist Hiroki Otsuka. The show is divided into six themed sections; in Meditative Spaces, Kunié Sugiura constructs a reflective room with a mirrored floor and photogram portraits of fellow artists like Yayoi Kusama and Takashi Murakami. In Referencing the Landscape, meanwhile, young photographer Go Sugimoto presents his nocturnal street photographs, which, taken on late-night rambles through the city, portray New York's beguiling, gritty allure.
