Whitney Museum of American Art says…

Wordsmith/conceptualist Lawrence Weiner is best known for all the things he doesn't do with his visually ascetic artwork. In his gigantic, often blocky slogans, tagged onto buildings around the world or on gallery walls, Weiner offers viewers pithy phrases to mull over, with implications about one's surroundings. Having lived near-broke on a houseboat for 18 years — back when Warhol was the only artist making bank — Weiner's work runs the gamut of so-called post-studio tactics: films, booklets, posters, multiples, and audio work. Chances are you've already stepped over Weiner's work, which, since a November 2000 project with the Public Art Fund, appears on 19 enigmatic manhole covers downtown, each bearing the words, "IN DIRECT LINE WITH ANOTHER AND THE NEXT."
