After quitting New York for over a decade, downtown darling Jeffrey Essmann returns to La MaMa's welcoming breast with a fabulous new show full of freaks and weirdoes, all lovingly played by Essman himself. The artist's deadpan standup — in which he discusses everything from his online sex habits to, of course, his mother — recalls an uncensored David Sedaris. The funniest moments, however, are not when Essmann is being himself, but rather an alcoholic Barbie doll or a French existentialist slam poet singing about the price of grapes. With piano accompaniment by Michael John LaChiusa, The Usual Freak Show introduces a new generation of New Yorkers to the elegant humor of Essmann's intimate cabaret.
