Performing Arts: Theatre August: Osage County

Set in present-day Oklahoma, Tracy Letts' August: Osage County has a bad case of "the plains," as one character describes the landscape's effect on the psyche. Such is the state of the minds and souls of the Weston family, a disconnected clan brought together by the disappearance of its paterfamilias. The wife rivals George and Martha in drug and alcohol abuse, the three daughters are struggling to escape their mother's iron grip, and the extended family faces endless shocks and revelations. Letts isn't afraid to venture into grand-American family-drama territory with this three-act, three-hour-plus saga, and his effort pays off impressively. The Chicago-bred cast from the famed Steppenwolf Theatre's original production is luminous, elevating the play to one of the most satisfying Broadway events of the season.
