Bringing new meaning to the term "pack rat," sculptor Tara Donovan accumulates everyday objects such as Styrofoam cups and drinking straws and uses the material goods to create large-scale installations that call to mind everything from topographical landscapes to cumulus clouds to stalagmites. A giant cube of toothpicks resembles a bale of hay; thousands of short wire pieces form an enormous pond ripple. Her new work — created specifically for her exhibit at the Met — spans the entire gallery space, encompassing the viewer in an intricate web of metal loops made from Mylar tape.
