At age 25, Norwegian singer/songwriter Sondre Lerche is already a capable explorer of traditional genres. His first two albums, Faces Down and Two Way Monologue, are sunny mixtures of jazz, pop, and folk; Duper Sessions, featuring the Faces Down Quartet, is a straighter take on big-band jazz; and Phantom Punch is a relatively aggressive rock record. But Lerche's confessional lyrics and sweet, soaring voice tend to drown out the genre trappings, lending cohesion to his diverse output. A consummate showman, he delivers his material with poise and charm, and despite the complexity of his chords, it's the winning simplicity of his melodies that sticks with you. Dan Wilson, frontman of alterna-rock band Semisonic (whose single "Closing Time" remains many a bartender's last-call favorite), opens.
