Recently, a much fussed-over New Yorker article lamented the lack of black rhythmic influence on today's indie-rock bands. If you're inclined to agree with this sentiment, there's still no blaming Celebration. On last month's The Modern Tribe, the group injects an irresistibly pulsing mix of soul and tribal polyrhythms into driving psychedelic rock. As if this impeccable groove weren't enough, Katrina Ford's soaring, Siouxsie-esque vocals further buttress the cabaret of sounds. In the end, when each of these elements collide in tight competition, it's the audience that wins out. So if you count yourself among those wishing indie bands would put a little more bounce in their beat, Celebration are an enthralling change of pace.
