Francesca Woodman's evocative black-and-white photographs garner acclaim among popular audiences and feminist scholars alike. In this exhibition at Marian Goodman, 40-odd images represent the major periods of Woodman's short life. Her phases of output are defined geographically: home in Boulder, Colorado; her RISD days in Providence; forays to Rome; and brief interludes in New York and at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. The star attraction is a suite of five large-format photographs from the Swan Song Series, first shown at her 1978 RISD thesis show. In these large, nearly square images (the edges are deliberately torn), Woodman uses fur, feathers, wire, and a white sheet to cover her body, creating haunting abstract compositions that reverberate deep within.
