Turn-of-the-century Russian playwright Anton Chekhov's plays are notable for their intricately rendered female characters, none of whom have it easy. Elizabeth Rosengren's Chekhov's Chicks re-envisions many of these characters as they console an unmarried, 26-year-old Anna Akimovna (from Chekhov's short story "A Woman's Kingdom") with stories of love, loss, marriage, money, and hardship. The play combines excerpts and characters from Ivanov, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, The Seagull, and the short story "The Bear," in ways that highlight Chekhov's humor and insight.
