Though his name is relatively new to the States, French book publishers largely recognize 82-year-old Robert Massin as their first and most influential art director. With the exception of his 1964 graphic rendering of Eugène Ionesco's play, The Bald Soprano, Massin is best-known for his far-reaching career as a compulsive designer, novelist, and scholar. He has flown in from Paris to be interviewed tonight by Surface magazine editor Laetitia Wolff, who first met Massin in 2000 and has been both a friend and a champion of his work ever since. The interview takes place to celebrate the publication of the first English-language monograph devoted to the designer.
