Like that of many of the Vancouver-based conceptual photographers and filmmakers of his generation (such as Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, and Ken Lum), Stan Douglas' work is great to look at, but requires a good deal of explanation. Invited by the Public Art Fund to present his work in its renowned lecture series, Douglas sheds light on his heavily researched projects, which frequently involve obscure historical narratives, remote locations, and the weighty influence of other directors' films. Existing in the grey area between indie film and video art, Douglas' recent exhibitions include the Rashomon-inspired western-meets-murder mystery Klatsassin, which screened at Chelsea's David Zwirner gallery, and his stunning pictures of derelict Cuba and a related film, which showed at Harlem's Studio Museum.
