Following the success of its Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting exhibition, the Museum of Arts and Design again draws glares from grandmas everywhere with Pricked: Extreme Embroidery. The medium is stripped of its Home-Sweet-Home associations and used to express political stances, violent recollections, and savvy design. The exhibition features 48 artists from 17 countries and includes work from textile pioneer Elaine Reichek, who has compared pixels and stitches for decades. A younger artist, Nava Lubelski, forgoes the club soda and instead sews bright colors into stains and spills, highlighting what would otherwise be hidden. Meanwhile, throughout the gallery, Nauman-esque arms by Benji Whalen protrude from the wall, each with its own stitched tattoos.
