Steal a Pencil for Me is the improbable-but-true documentary about the love affair conducted between two prisoners of a Nazi concentration camp. The film has so many storybook attributes that it approaches a classic Hollywood feature (Spielberg, we're talking to you), but it sidesteps treacle with a simple aesthetic and enough real-life twists. Director Michèle Ohayon shifts between present-day interviews with Jack and Ina and Holocaust-era footage accompanied by the love letters that flew between them during their incarceration — complicated dramatically by the inconvenient existence of Jack's also-imprisoned wife.
