The cheat-sheet on Thomas Ruff goes like this: a student of the austere photographer-duo Bernd and Hilla Becher in Düsseldorf; contemporary of those other large-format German photographers (Gursky, Höfer, Struth); known for his conceptual, serial projects. Ruff gave up shooting his own images in a recent series, Nudes, using porn-stills pulled from the Internet. Ruff continues to address photography in the age of the Internet in his latest work, jpeg, an ongoing series of massively enlarged versions of downloaded compressed files, a process that maxes out the resolution to near abstraction. Like the methods of Monet or Seurat, Ruff's application of contemporary image-making to classical subjects — landscapes, cityscapes, skyscrapers, mountain streams — brings a jarring historical perspective to our own time.
