New Museum Reopens: Target 30 Free Hours
-
- Courstesy New Museum, New York
Contemporary art returns to lower Manhattan with the opening of the new New Museum's boxy, neo-minimalist abode on the Bowery. Designed by SANAA (Japanese duo Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), the building also comes stocked with an ambitious new program and team of curators. Beginning at noon on Saturday, the museum welcomes visitors for 30 continuous hours of free (albeit ticketed) admission. Contemporary sculptures fill the building's spare interior for the inaugural exhibition, Unmonumental. Special commissions include Ugo Rondinone's neon-rainbow banner Hell Yes! — recently spotted on the building's shimmering facade — and YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES' noir-inspired, seven-channel video work in the lobby.
