New Museum of Contemporary Art says…

The new New Museum inaugurates its faux-gritty emporium with three-part exhibition Unmonumental: The Object in the 21st Century. An ace curatorial squad brings together 30 artists whose work tends to reject the grandiose, self-serious, and industrially produced in favor of the "unmonumental": that is to say, irreverent, slapdash, and self-deprecating to the point of resembling piles of junk. Rachel Harrison's assemblages are a perfect example: her quirky, colorful Huffy Howler incorporates a yellow mountain bike, designer handbags, and a color photo of Mel Gibson into a three-dimensional collage, all while echoing traditional sculptural ideas about balance and form. This is art that grapples with the petty material objects in our lives, and it's not always a pretty sight.
