Peter Jay Sharpe Theater, Symphony Space says…

Had Christopher Marlowe not ended up a dead man in Deptford at age 29, we might have had as many festivals dedicated to him today as we do for the Bard. Marlowe in Love, anybody? And what a shame, given that Marlowe's unforgiving, blood-soaked tragedies translate so well onto the contemporary stage — especially in the deft hands of the Red Bull Theater. Director Jesse Berger's Edward the Second plays up all the best elements of Marlovian drama (namely sex and violence). And boy, does he give it to us in spades, including sodomy, decapitations, and gay-bashing. The gorgeous Blade Runner-meets-The Tudors costuming underscores the timelessness of this tale of sexual obsession and politics.
