Possibly a veiled reference to the Billy Joel song, New York States of Mind is curator Shaheen Merali's look at what has made New York such an exceptional place for artists. Europe's grand-provocateur Marcel Duchamp toiled here for years in secret, performance artist Tehching Hsieh spent an entire year outdoors, and Gordon Matta-Clark cut massive holes in the side of a Manhattan warehouse. Tracing a legacy from mid-century to today, New York States of Mind also covers a younger generation of artists, who, far from operating in the city's shadows, have built a practice in response to New York's status as a media and financial nexus. The city's commercial energy powers the frenetic digital-media installations of of Ian Burns and Jon Kessler, the activist-inspired art of Carolina Caycedo, and the conspiracy-theory diagrams of Mark Lombardi.
