Phenomenal young painter Dana Schutz, who rocketed to fame via the 2003 Venice Biennale while still an MFA student, has won critical acclaim among art critics and her young peers alike. Success hasn't been a curse for Schutz, who continues to generate gruesome, apocalyptic images, humming with vibrant colors and laid down in precise, but never conventional, strokes. At SVA tonight, Schutz presents works from her breakout series Self Eaters and the People Who Love Them, portraits of a man with wooden teeth, Michael Jackson on the autopsy table, a headless dog, a publicly dismembered giant, and other characters from her gnarly imaginary world.
