Ten years into a career that aims to make explicit the ties between medieval and contemporary compositions, accomplished vocal group Trio Mediaeval have made an anniversary recording that goes way back, mining the centuries-old trove of Norwegian folk songs for material. The sacred sound of the primarily secular songs makes this crisp material difficult to categorize, but easy to listen to — although it mustn't be confused with easy listening. Even if your Norwegian is rusty, you'll understand this glorious music, some of which is improvised without real words, sort of like scatting in jazz. Trio Mediaeval, on the last date of their US tour with percussionist Birger Mistereggen (a key contributor to Folk Songs), offer a pure break from a season saturated with familiar and often insipid melodies and medleys.
