New Yorker music critic Alex Ross grew up listening to traditional classical music like Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, but in college, the burgeoning music snob developed an ear for chaotic avant-garde, obscure free jazz, and even the "noisier end of rock," like indie ass-kickers Sonic Youth. In his long-awaited first book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, Ross' democratic, all-inclusive love of the art form grounds 20th-century classical music in a wide political and cultural context that highlights its intersections with pop, rock, and hip-hop. This evening, the blog-happy Ross discusses his book at 192 Books in Chelsea.
