Film: Documentary Billy the Kid

First-time director Jennifer Venditti's Billy the Kid is the sort of fare that used to flourish at Sundance before it got too big for its snow pants (happily, it did take a jury prize at this year's South by Southwest). A loner who prizes honesty at precisely the age when most dismiss the concept, 15-year-old Billy is both normal and abnormal: he hungers for the local waitress, harbors fantasies of being a superhero, and spooks the bejesus out of his peers at his Maine high school. Clocking in at a clean 85 minutes, this documentary achieves its emotional depth by casting its protagonist's meanderings against a taut narrative structure.
