Even with all the culturally savvy, devastatingly intelligent new-media publications out there, there's still a place for Esther K. Smith's How to Make Books. The how-to volume is a lesson in itself: from its classic handset-type on cardboard cover to luxuriant matte-textured paper, Smith ensures that aspiring booksmiths have a fine reference. A book-arts master, Smith has exhibited her work at the Met, Tate Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Tonight, she shares the secrets of her trade at the Great Hall, so grab a seat before all those Cooper Union kids do.
