Some call them doom, some call them thrash, but Lair of the Minotaur are just effing heavy. The Chicago trio, born from the wreckage of Weasel Walter's grindcore/death-metal project 7000 Dying Rats, makes some of the truest metal in the US, opting for Slayer-like menace, charging hooks, and mythology-inspired lyrics rather than the emo posturing or hardcore machismo of most other American metal acts. New York's own Unearthly Trance have just as big of a sound, but they slow it down to a glacial pace, carving canyons in listeners' heads. Cake Shop's basement seems impossibly small for this show, so make sure you wear a helmet in case of a collapse.
