As winner of the 2006 Bucksbaum Award — given to a Whitney Biennial star — Mark Bradford was granted a future exhibition at the Whitney. With the 2008 Biennial on the horizon, Bradford 's finally got the ground-floor gallery to himself, where he showcases his massive paper collages made from advertisements collected by the artist in his neighborhood of South Central LA. Bradford layers the posters on top of one another and then strategically wears them down to produce abstract forms that often resemble topographical maps with curving on-ramps, freeway arteries, and street grids.
