Note:
There is an opening reception Thur Jan 10 (6-8pm).
Taking her cue from W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming," Diana Thater presents a two-room video installation depicting the bond between falconers and their falcons. Set in a stone amphitheater in the Santa Monica mountains, Thater's video was shot with a crane, the camera swooping above the falconers like their prized birds. In another series of nine videos, Thater choreographs games of chess (like falconry, a ripe metaphor for competitive collaboration). On nine video monitors, disembodied hands play various games, including a recreation of the famous 1851 Immortal Game, Garry Kasparov's 2003 match against computer program Deep Junior, and a specially commissioned black-versus-black contest.
