Even with all the new technology available, the grand arc of Western art continue to hold sway over young artists. Michael Bell-Smith's conceptual animations deal with themes of the sublime and our relationship to nature and address formal ideas of flatness and space. In his new works at Foxy Production, Bell-Smith presents a suite of looping videos that take image-making back to its simplest forms, employing digital-animation tropes like GIFs in stripped-down compositions. In Glitter Bend, a hemisphere of shimmering figures evokes a landscape after dusk, while in Starfields 1 and 2, movement through space is evoked through remarkably minimal means.
